Suriname

 

 

The territory of the Republic of Suriname is located on the north – western section of the South American sub – continent and is located between the 2 and the 6 northern  latitude and the 54 and the 58 longitude (West of Greenwich).

 

The country is bordered in the north by the Atlantic Ocean. The Southern border is formed by the Tumac Humac and the Acarai  Mountain Chains, which separate the territory of Suriname from Brazil.

In the east the country is bordered by French Guiana, the 52nd Department d’ Outer Mer of the Republic of France.

In the west the country is bordered by the Cooperative Republic of Guyana. The territories of Suriname and Guyana are separated by the Corantijn river.

 

The territorial waters claimed by Suriname include the sea-strip north of the country within a width of 200 nautical miles north of the coastline.

 

The coastline has a length  of  approximately 275 kilometres.     

The average distance between the coastline and the southern border amounts to 350 kilometres.

Suriname has a tropical climate, with daily temperatures varying between 23 and 31 centigrade. The year can be roughly divided into two rain seasons (April-August and November-February) and two dry seasons (February-April and August-November).

 

 

Suriname is divided into ten districts:

  3. Coronie               (capital Totness)
  4. Marowijne          (capital Albina; important town Moengo)
  5. Nickerie             (capital Nieuw Nickerie, important town Wageningen)

  7. Paramaribo        (country capital)
  8. Saramacca         (capital Groningen)
  9. Sipaliwini             (Sipaliwini)
  10. Wanica               (capital Lelydorp)
