The flag of Suriname
consists of five colored bands with a five-point star in the middle band. From
the top to the bottom the colors of the bands are green (2 measures wide),
white (1), red (4), white (1) and green (2). The star in the middle of the red
band is yellow. The correct way to position the flag is putting the star with a
single point up and two points down.
The red band
symbolizes progress and the fight for a better life. The white band stands for
freedom and justice. The green band symbolizes the fertility of the Surinamese
soil and the yellow star the promising future of Suriname.
The coat of arms of Suriname consists of two
Indians holding a shield. Below the Indians and the shield you find the motto
`Justitia Pietas Fides' which means `Justice Faith Loyalty'. The sailing boat
at the left part of the shield symbolizes the history of Suriname when slaves
and indentured labourers were respectively taken to Suriname from Africa and Asia.
The palm at the right part of the shield stands for the present as well
as for justice. The diamond in the middle symbolises a heart. The
five-point star within the diamond stands for the five continents the
inhabitants of Suriname came from
